On Friday, May 5, Elkhart General Hospital’s Hand Hygiene Champions hosted a celebratory event in honor of World Hand Hygiene Day. Congratulations to Bri Poorman, RN (Med-Surg Educator), Dawn Simpson, LPN (Employee Health), and Dawn Wilkins, RN (Infection Prevention) for developing this fun, interactive and educational event! (See additional photos below.)
The event was open to all associates and the public with opportunities to pledge dedication to performing the best hand hygiene always. It was a fun-filled day full of learning — in all, 84 associates came through to take the pledge, including Elkhart General Hospital President Carl Risk II.
The day’s activities included:
- A chance to win one of 20 donated gift packs full of hand hygiene products from Georgia-Pacific
- A sanitizer station to learn the World Health Organization’s steps to properly performing hand hygiene with alcohol-based hand rub
- UV light hand wash stations with simulated germs to test participants’ skills at performing hand washing with soap and water
- A hand hygiene educational webinar, including a Meijer gift card for one lucky attendee
During the week leading up to the event, the champions organized a scavenger hunt with a character themed off of the popular show, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” Instead, daily clues encouraged Elkhart General associates to figure out “Where in the World is Handi Sani-Tizer?” Once the character was found, associates sent in a selfie with Handi Sani-Tizer (a cleverly costumed large bottle of hand sanitizer, by the way!) to claim a prize.
